Like all great cars in 2018, the point here is to deliver an experience like no other. The DB11’s cabin is dominated by its sublime 'brogued' leather trim, which is almost enough to distract you from the car’s wonky ergonomics. Mind you, it’s almost as seductive at 30mph. Its relative chunkiness also means it’s better suited to the long, sweeping roads of our French test route than firing itself between second gear hairpins. Neither of these time-honoured increments are particularly relevant to the DB11 Volante, though it does its best work somewhere in between (and does it more successfully than its V12 sibling – it’s just better sorted all-round). The Volante is powered by a 510bhp, 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 (a Mercedes unit, so its provenance is beyond question), good for 62mph in 4.5 seconds, and a top speed of 187mph. And, grand tourer or not, this is one quick car. We drove the DB11 Volante on the Alpes-Maritime and Route Napoleon near the French Riviera, and can confirm that not even the roughest surface disturbs its composure. Losing the roof hurts a car’s structural rigidity, so Aston’s engineers have beefed up the chassis.
